Integrative biology and associated organisms

For the forest and timber industry it is essential that this renewable natural resource remains competitive. Within this context, the work carried out by the “Integrative biology and associated organisms” research cluster aims to raise knowledge of the genetic diversity of several major tree species in order to enhance conservation of natural resources and to identify new varieties. This research focuses, in particular, on understanding better the processes involved in wood formation and the tolerance of trees to disease and water stress. At the same time insect populations living within the ecosystem are also studied.

The “Integrative biology and associated organisms”research cluster consists of:

  • The Forest Tree Improvement, Genetics and Physiology research unit (Amélioration, Génétique et Physiologie Forestières- AGPF)develops innovative strategiesfor selection and dissemination of genetic progress. It is involved in assessing and managing genetic diversity and also in studying the interaction between improved species and their corresponding natural populations. The unit is included in two projects financed within the framework ofInvestissements d’avenir,EquipEX Xyloforest and the biotechnologies and bioresources project Genius.
  • The Forest zoology research unit (Zoologie Forestière - URZF) aims to characterise the genetics, physiology and behaviour of forest insect populations which are invasive or expanding with global changes, to analyse the mechanisms governing the success of biological invasion by insects, to evaluate the ecological and economic risks and to establish control measures.
  • The Forest genetics and biomass experimental unit (Génétique et Biomasse Forestière - GBFor) is involved in describing and conserving the genetic diversity of forest species, in studying genetic control of selection criteria and in sustainably producing forest biomass. It also participates in managing and promoting the comparative plantation network PLANTACOMP established throughout France.
  • The Trees and responses to hydric and environmental constraints unit (Arbre et réponses aux contraintes hydriques et environnementales –ARCHE), under the responsibility of the University of Orleans, investigates the relationship between poplars and available water. It aims to identify the ecophysiological and molecular bases of drought tolerance.
  • The conservatory of forest tree genetics(Conservatoire Génétique des Arbres Forestiers  -CGAF) works with Inra to investigate the genetics of forest tree populations and conservation biology.
